Merkel invites Biden to Germany in first phone call

BERLIN, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel has invited new U.S. President Joe Biden to visit Germany during their first official phone call after Biden's inauguration, the German government said on Monday night. Merkel congratulated Biden on his inauguration, and declared Germany's willingness to take on responsibilities in dealing with international tasks together with its European and transatlantic partners, according to a statement of the German federal government. Both leaders agreed that more international efforts were needed to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. 'I feel like I am reborn': Rescued Chinese miners speak of relief

BEIJING, Jan 26, 2021 (AFP) - Two Chinese miners who were dramatically rescued after being trapped underground for two weeks described on Tuesday their joy and relief at being free. Eleven men out of a group of 22 were pulled out alive by rescue workers on Sunday after a January 10 mine blast in east China's Shandong province entombed them hundreds of metres underground.  "I feel like I am reborn," one of the miners, surnamed Du, was quoted as saying by state broadcaster CGTN Tuesday, wearing pyjamas as he spoke to reporters from his hospital bed.  "We had no food to eat for the first nine days," he added. "There are no words to describe the feeling (of being rescued). So relieved." Du was part of a group of 11 miners who first made managed to make contact with rescuers on January 17 by sending up a note though a long shaft drilled down into the rock. Russia says Biden must lift sanctions to save Iran nuclear deal

MOSCOW, Jan 26, 2021 (AFP) - Russia said Tuesday it was up to Washington to take the first steps if US President Joe Biden wants to salvage the landmark Iran nuclear deal. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged Washington to lift sanctions on Tehran and save the historic agreement during his first talks with his Iranian counterpart since Biden's election victory raised hopes for the fate of the deal. Lavrov said that Russia and Iran "share the same position" on the preservation of the 2015 accord, urging the United States to lift sanctions as a condition for Iran's return to compliance. Germany mulls cutting international air traffic 'to almost zero'

BERLIN, Jan 26, 2021 (AFP) - Germany is considering almost completely halting flights into the country to slow the spread of more infectious strains of the coronavirus, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said Tuesday. Uganda withdraws troops from opposition leader's house

China, New Zealand sign free trade deal upgrade protocol

BEIJING, January 26 : (Xinhua) -- China and New Zealand on Tuesday signed a protocol on upgrading their 12-year-old free trade agreement (FTA), which is expected to bring more benefits to the peoples of the two countries. Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and his New Zealand counterpart signed the protocol via video link. In 2008, China signed an FTA with New Zealand, the first FTA between China and a developed country. The two sides announced the conclusion of their three-year negotiations on the upgrade in November 2019. Negative COVID-19 test required for travel to US

Washington [US], January 26 : (ANI): Passengers flying into the United States would require to show proof of testing negative for COVID-19 at least three days prior to the departure. The US Department of State said that a proof of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding. This order applies to both foreign nationals and US citizens. Tractor rally: Farmers at Singhu Border stopped from moving towards Ring Road

K2 winter summiteers receive a rousing welcome home

Anti-COVID vaccination to start Wednesday

Karnali, Jan 26 (RSS): Covishield, the vaccine against COVID-19 has arrived in Karnali province from the central government on Monday night. A total of 24,000 vile of the vaccine were transported to Karnali via the Nepalgunj cold store, after it was received from Kathmandu. The provincial health directorate is initiating the vaccination programme from tomorrow. Elephantiasis virus found in Narayansthan and Kushmisera

Galkot, Jan 26 (RSS): Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as Elephantiasis has stood as a health challenge again in Baglung. Just before the start of the 12th phase of Elephantiasis prevention campaign, the disease was found in Narayanthan of Balewa and Kushisera of Jaimini of the district.  The disease was believed to have been prevented in 6 years of campaign. But a sample test carried out recently for the prevention campaign found eight people carrying the infection, according to Health Office, Baglung.  Eight people in Naransthan and two people in Jaimi were found carrying the disease that leads to enlargement of limbs and body parts due to tissue swelling. Three of the people in Naransthan have experienced a reoccurrence of the tropical disease. India's COVID-19 tally rises to 10,625,428, death toll crosses 153,000

NEW DELHI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,625,428 on Friday as 14,545 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.    According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 153,032 as 163 COVID-19 patients died since Thursday morning.    There are still 188,688 active cases in the country, while 10,283,708 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment. 16 militants killed in E. Afghanistan

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 16 militants have been confirmed dead as Afghan forces stormed Taliban hideouts in Khogiani and Shirzad districts of the eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday, said a statement of the provincial government released here Friday.    The operations, according to the statement, were conducted late Thursday night in Akram Khil area of Khogiani district and Hashim Khil area of Shirzad district and in total left 16 dead including five group commanders.    Two hideouts and two checkpoints of the militants were also destroyed during the raids, the statement asserted.    The Taliban outfit has yet to make comments. 

U.S. Senate Republican leader proposes postponing Trump's impeachment trial until mid-February

High level team inspects disputed location of Mid-Hill Highway

Ghunsa people leave settlement to avoid severe cold

Phungling, Jan 22 (RSS):  The people at Ghunsa village of Phattanglung Rural Municipality-6 in Taplejung district have left the settlement to avoid cold in the wake of snowfall. Seven households left the home and reached Kathmandu, while four shifted to district headquarter Phungling bazaar.  Similarly, a family has begun living at Pashupati bazaar of Ilam. A local Pema Sherma informed that 28 families were living at Ghunsa village. Now, there are only 16 families left in the village.  Ghunsa is a touristy place located at the gateway to Kanchanjungha Mountain, the third highest peak in the world. The Sherpa community is living at the village located at the altitude of 3,500 meter. The village is blanketed with snow for three months from December to February every year. 336 new cases of COVID-19 registered on Thursday

Kathmandu, Jan 21(RSS):  A total of 336 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the past 24 hours in the country.    According to the Ministry of Health and Population, these cases were identified while conducting PCR tests on 5,030 individuals.  With this, total infected number has reached 268,646 so far in the country.   Ministry further shared that 226 infected persons have recovered in the same period.   With this, total recovery has reached 262,868 till today.  There are 3,799 are active cases of the infection across the country.  The Ministry further confirmed that four infected patients died of the infection in the past 24 hours. Total deaths caused by the infection have reached 1,979 in the country.

NOC provides employment to acid attack survivors

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has provided jobs to two women who survived acid attack. The NOC provided the job for one year under its corporate social responsibility. The beneficiaries are Pabitra Karki from Okhaldhunga and Basanti Pariyar from Nawalparasi. They were provided jobs since December 31. It is believed that the jobs would help sustain their living.  Karki and Pariyar who suffered worst with acid attack and were living psychosocial fear had come to NOC contact. Both of them had poor families and the physique weakened with attack. Reasoning it, they applied, seeking assistance to manage daily life and regular medicine. The NOC was also informed of their academic qualification for the jobs to match it.  NOC Spokesperson Binit Mani Upadhyay informed that the assistance would help them boost confidence to restore a socially dignified life. They get paid Rs 20,000 per month for a year.

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): Hearing continued over the writ petition filed at the Supreme Court against the decision of the government to dissolve the House of Representatives. Today was the fifth day of hearing on the main issue of contention. Seven advocates presented their arguments in favour of three writ petitioners today before the constitutional bench led by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana. Putting his arguments against the decision of the government, advocate  Om Prakash Aryal said the Constitution does not have any provision for dissolution of the parliament. He also pointed out that the decision of the President to dissolve the HoR on the recommendation of the government was still not published in the national gazette. Friday’s protest to be peaceful: Struggle committee coordinator Shrestha

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS):  The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) led by Prachanda-Nepal has stated that its scheduled protest programme for Friday would be peaceful.  The party’s central struggle committee, issuing a press release today, has stated that the protest would be peaceful responding to the rumors that the protest would be violent.   The committee coordinator and party spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha stated that they were alert that some people were trying to divert the mind of people by spreading the rumors that the protest would be violent.   The party has mobilized 2,000 volunteers to make the protest rally and programme disciplined and peaceful, press release reads.   The party has been organizing various protest programmes against the government’s move of Parliament dissolution. 

India hands over 1 million doses of vaccines to Nepal

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): The Indian government has handed over one million doses of vaccines against coronavirus.  Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra handed over the vaccines to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in a brief programme organized at PM's residence, Baluwatar on Thursday.   On the occasion, PM Oli said, "I thank PM Narendra Modi as well as the government and people of India for the generous grant of one million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Nepal at this critical time when India is rolling out vaccination for its own people." On the occasion, Ambassador Kwatra said as a close neighbour, India is delighted to provide assistance to Nepal; and it is committed to continue health related assistance to Nepal in the days ahead.

Basnet selected coordinator of Press Organization

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): The second national gathering of Press Organization Nepal has unanimously elected joint-coordinator Ganesh Basnet as the coordinator. Basnet replaces coordinator Mahesh Dahal, who was removed citing inactive in the organization responsibilities. The organization has also endorsed a new statute with a decision to have a 351-member central committee. The gathering ended with a determination to reconstitute and re-manage the organization based on inclusion at all levels, by uniting at the central, provincial, district, foundation and associate level in the new situation. It also welcomed the decision of the government to dissolve the House of Representatives and go for fresh elections. Minister Ale stresses prompt services

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS):  Minister for Forest and Environment Prem Bahadur Ale has directed the officials at the Ministry and line agencies to provide prompt services.   In a meeting with chiefs of different divisions under the Ministry on Thursday, Minister Ale said the services should not be obstructed by the officials. He also directed the Ministry employees to be alert as he had received some negative reports regarding the President Chure Conservation Programme of late.  The Minister however vowed, "Wrong motives and concerns in the name of Chure conservation will not be tolerated."  On the occasion, officials urged the Minister to bring the district forest officer (DFO) under the federal government as complications were surfaced while they were working under the province governments.  

Need to ensure affordable access to vaccines: Minister Gyawali

Goods worth Rs 694 billion exported in six months

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): Exports have increased in the first six months of the current fiscal year 2020/21 as imports of goods declined.  As per the details of first six months released by the Department of Customs, exports have increased by six per cent as imports have declined by five per cent.  According to the details, goods worth Rs 661.24 billion were imported in six months which was less by 4.81 per cent as compared to corresponding period of previous fiscal year.  Goods worth Rs 694.69 billion were exported during the corresponding period of previous fiscal year.  Similarly, goods worth around Rs 60.80 billion were exported in six months which was an increase by 6.14 per cent as compared to corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.   Trade deficit was improved by 5.80 per cent this year, according to the details. Door opened to send Nepali youth to Israel for employment

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): 'Implementation Protocol' has been signed between Nepal and Israel today for the implementation of 'Agreement related to temporary employment of Nepali workers in labour market of Israel'. A million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 arrive

Kathmandu, Jan 21 (RSS): One million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 has arrived in Nepal. The vaccines provided by India as grant assistance were brought by Air India flight this afternoon.  Ambassador of India to Nepal, Vinay Mohan Kwatra handed over the consignment of vaccines called ' Covishield' to Minister for health and Population Hridayesh Tripathi at the Tribhuvan International Airport. On the occasion, minister Tripathi thanked the Government of India for providing the vaccines as grant assistance even during the adverse situation. 216 accidents reported in six months in Chitwan

Chitwan, Jan 21 (RSS): Two hundred and sixteen road accidents have been reported in Chitwan district in the last six months of the current fiscal year. Fifty-eight persons have died and 361 have been injured in these accidents, the District Traffic Police Office, Chitwan said. According to the Office, most of the accidents have occurred on the East-west highway. Seventy-four traffic accidents took place on this highway, killing 22 persons.  Similarly, six people were killed in the 34 accidents that took place on the Narayangadh-Muglin road section while seven people died in 12 accidents. Five persons were killed in 37 accidents occurred in Bharatpur Ring Road while 18 persons lost their lives in 58 traffic accidents occurred in other roads. Twin suicide blasts in Baghdad leave nearly 30 dead

BAGHDAD, Jan 21, 2021 (AFP) - A rare twin suicide bombing killed nearly 30 people at a crowded market in central Baghdad on Thursday, Iraqi state media said, the city's deadliest attack in three years. Fire breaks out at Serum Institute in Pune, 10 fire tenders rushed to spot

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], January 21 (ANI ): As many as 10 fire tenders were rushed to the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Maharashtra's Pune on Thursday where millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine are being manufactured. According to the officials, a fire broke out at Terminal 1 gate and the fire continues to rage at the fourth and fifth floors of SEZ3 building inside Terminal Gate 1. The site where the fire broke out, is an under-construction building at SII. The vaccine and vaccine manufacturing plant are safe.
